What is Epoxy?

Epoxy resins, also known as polyepoxides, are a class of prepolymer and polymers. When mixed with a hardener, epoxy will "cure" and transition into a plastic-like material. The speed at which it cures is dependant on the temperature at which it is handled, and if any accelerates have been added to it's formula. It's commonly referred to as "Liquid Glass" due to it's high gloss appearance when solid.

Epoxy is used for a wide range of applications due to it's versatility, durability, adhesion properties, chemical and heat resistance, scratch resistance, and insulation capabilities. Epoxy resin is most popularly used as an affordable alternative to stone or marble, particularly in flooring or countertop renovation. When mixed with paint, sand, or metallic flakes, epoxy can take on an entirely different appearance. Epoxy resin is also used as a clear coat or finishing layer for garage floors or warehouses. It's strength makes it ideal for high traffic areas with maximum wear and tear potential. It is also frequently used in the concrete polishing process, as it provides a luminous sheen in it's most basic form.

Although epoxy is most famous for it's in-home or business related projects, resin is also extremely popular amongst artists and furniture designers. River table epoxy is one such example of a technique using epoxy resin.

In closing, Epoxy is a man-made material used to design flooring and countertops that mimics styles and colors of elements created in nature: such as marble or granite. It is more affordable than it's counterparts, and much more versatile due to it's consistency prior to curing. It is one of the most popular refinishing options on the market for home and business owners on a budget.
